Daniel Maegaard sits in his Morocco hotel room, Wolf Game acquisition papers spread across the desk, explaining why he’s buying a game that everyone else abandoned.

It’s a characteristic move for the collector known as Seedphrase: buy the rarest CryptoPunk before anyone knew about NFTs, accumulate AI art when the world was still debating the legitimacy of the movement, and now, take over a defunct Web3 game that lost millions.

“Everyone called me up asking if I was sure I wanted to do this,” he says, recounting conversations with fellow collectors. “They said it had too much baggage, too much negative history. But I couldn’t find a single con in why I wouldn’t take it over.”

The conviction comes from pattern recognition. Maegaard has spent twelve years making contrarian bets that look obvious only in retrospect. He discovered Bitcoin in 2013 not as a trader but as a psychology student fascinated by human behavior. He bought 30 million Ripple tokens when remittance was broken and no one understood blockchain’s utility. He spent $18,000 on a seven-trait CryptoPunk in May 2020 when buying a JPEG for the price of a car was unthinkable.

Now, at the peak of what he calls “CTO season” — community takeovers reshaping crypto’s landscape — he’s betting that a failed experiment holds the key to solving Web3 gaming’s fundamental flaw: the Ponzi problem.

Origin Story

Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia after his parents split, Daniel learned early that consensus is usually wrong as he watched adults around him trapped in patterns he couldn’t accept.

“My grandfather worked his entire life, owned a building company, was quite successful,” he recalls. “Three years before he died, he finally took my grandmother on a world holiday. He was enslaved to his job. That wasn’t the life I wanted.”

He describes a pervasive curiosity that manifested early through collectibles — Pokemon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh, stamps — but always with an eye toward what was coming next. Growing up in a small surfing town, attending Christian school, playing tennis, he watched adults around him trapped in patterns he couldn’t accept.

Maegaard’s mother raised him alone, middle-class, watching her work nine-to-five like everyone else. The formula was clear: work forty years, retire at sixty-five, maybe take a vacation. He wanted something different.

“I got a psychology degree, went to law school, my father’s a lawyer,” he says. “But watching him work twelve-hour days, never taking holidays — that stuck with me.”

“My grandfather was enslaved to his job. That wasn’t the life I wanted.”

When he discovered Bitcoin in 2013 through bitcointalk.org, it wasn’t the technology that hooked him. It was the community: “All these movers and shakers who had no idea what we were talking about. We didn’t know if this would interrupt the financial system or go mainstream. But it felt like a movement.”

The psychology student in him recognized something deeper. “The psychology of markets fascinated me. There was this crossover between human behavior and trading that felt deeply satisfying.”

His first major win came through Ripple, a bet so large he became one of the biggest whales. “I had maybe 30 million Ripple tokens. I believed in the messaging on fixing the banking system, making remittance instant and free instead of fifty dollars and seven days.”

The pattern was establishing itself: find broken systems, bet on solutions before consensus forms, hold conviction when everyone else capitulates.

The Seven-Trait Revolution

When CryptoPunks and CryptoKitties emerged in 2017, Daniel saw his childhood collecting instincts validated on-chain. But ICO mania’s “pump and dump” culture drove him away. “It became this game of extraction. How much money can we extract from players? That wasn’t why I got into crypto.”

Axie Infinity brought him back in 2018. He had leftover altcoins from the previous cycle that Axie accepted for their land sale. Soon he was the largest landholder, deep in Discord, on calls with the team.

“Play-to-earn made sense,” he explains. “Why spend hundreds of hours on Call of Duty purely for entertainment when I could play Axie and get paid?”

But it was CryptoPunks that captured his imagination. “I’d wake up and the CryptoPunks Discord was the first channel I’d visit. I’d scroll through every single message with my morning coffee.”

The community drew him in: Snowfro, Nate Alex, Pranksy, Von Mises — “big brains” congregating around pixelated avatars. “If this collection attracts the most intelligent people in the industry, there must be something more.”

When he asked the Discord about the rarest Punk, someone mentioned a seven-trait specimen. Maegaard knew the owner, had already bought Punks from him. After days of negotiation, he paid $18,000 on May 20, 2020.

“No one had ever spent that much on a CryptoPunk before,” he notes. The record-breaking purchase would look quaint within months, but at the time, it was insanity.

From Crypto to Culture

The bull run Daniel saw coming arrived with violent force. His CryptoPunk investment turned from lunacy to genius as the NFT market exploded in 2021. He rode the wave while shaping it, accumulating Art Blocks at mint, building positions in AI art before ChatGPT made it mainstream, collecting sets of Harold Cohen’s 1960s AI experiments and Elman Mansimov’s alignDRAW paper prompts.

“I view AI art almost like photography,” he explains. “When photography first hit the scenes, people thought it would kill painting. That’s the response we’re getting from AI today.”

Maegaard views his DJ sets as cultural infiltration. Wearing a helmet sculpted to match his seven-trait CryptoPunk, Seedphrase performed from Dubai to London, smuggling NFT culture into spaces where mentioning blockchain would clear the dance floor. Through W1 Curates, he brought digital art to Ushuaia and Hi Ibiza this year, transforming venue screens into galleries where millions of clubgoers absorbed animated NFTs without realizing they were looking at the future of art collecting.

“Positioning Seedphrase at the center of culture across art, music, fashion,” Daniel reflects on the strategy. “This is what brings people together.”

The art and fashion worlds took notice. He became an ambassador for Louis Vuitton and released a clothing collab with mmERCH. His curatorial work expanded through W1 Curates and The Disruptive Gallery, where he serves as head curator. At Christie’s Augmented Intelligence sale, where he spoke alongside industry leaders, over half the bidders were Gen Z or millennials, showing that digital art was finding its audience.

His Seedphrase AI agent launched to democratize access to his collecting insights. “Time and time again, people would message me — ‘What should I be collecting? What should I be looking at?’ As a human being, it’s impossible to get back to all these messages.”

Daniel envisions it eventually collecting autonomously, competing with his human decisions. “Imagine when we get to the point where it’s like, let’s compare Seedphrase AI to human Seedphrase and see who can outdo the other.”

Through it all, he maintained his thesis: digital art would inevitably find its place alongside physical art. “The world is becoming more digital, the tech is getting better year on year. In no reality will this not happen.”

The Builder Arc

Collecting gave Maegaard influence. Building would give him control.

“I’ve been a crypto investor since 2013, which is very passive,” he explains. “Even with NFTs, you’re investing in someone else’s dream. I wanted to determine my own fate.”

Wolf Game represented everything Daniel believed Web3 gaming could be. Launched in 2021, it attracted big names like Post Malone, Gary Vee, and Luca Netz. It pioneered risk-to-earn mechanics where players could steal each other’s resources. Energy underpinned the economy. Whales could buy land and run businesses while smaller players did the day-to-day grinding.

“Low time cost, great yields, fantastic community,” he recalls. I was contributing most of the energy to the ecosystem at the time.”

Then it collapsed. The original developer, Shepherd, burned out. PixelVault took over and tried migrating to Blast, which failed. The game went offline for over a year. When PixelVault attempted a Solana revival, the community revolted.

“Every day, there were still messages in the Discord,” he observes. “People begging for the game to come back. The community was strong — there just wasn’t a game to play.”

Maegaard’s acquisition plan aims to address Web3 gaming’s fatal flaw: every successful game becomes a Ponzi requiring new players to pay earlier ones until music stops and everyone rushes for exits.

“We’re turning Wolf Game into a distribution layer,” he explains. The model is novel: partner with projects launching tokens, allocate percentages to Wolf Game players who earn them through gameplay.

“Instead of needing new players, we need these tokens to do well,” he says. “Monthly rewards into the game ecosystem without relying on players propping up the floor.”

The more players Wolf Game attracts, the more attractive it becomes for projects seeking fair token distribution. The better the tokens perform, the more valuable Wolf Game assets become. It aims to build a flywheel that doesn’t require greater fools.

“People are sick of trenches, sick of bonding curves, sick of insider trading,” Daniel notes. “What’s fairer than putting time, money, and effort into mining tokens?”

The Abstract chain partnership provides technical infrastructure. With new gameplay modes and collaborations in the works, he expects tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of players. Each month brings new tokens to mine, new reasons to engage, new value flowing through the system.

Let the Games Begin

Morocco’s quiet gives Maegaard space to architect Wolf Game’s resurrection. Legal documents, tokenomics models, partnership frameworks, the infrastructure for breaking twelve years of gaming Ponzis.

The critics are predictable. Every NFT founder friend warns him about the thankless job ahead. From Spencer at Moonbirds to Sergito at Meebits, they’ve all carried the weight of community expectations.

“When I put my top hat in the ring back in May, I wanted the community to decide,” Daniel explains. “If they chose someone else, so be it. But it’s been months now, and they want this.”

The distinction that matters isn’t what failed but why. Failed execution can be fixed. Failed fundamentals cannot.

“The community never left. The game failed because leadership made wrong decisions, not because players got bored or found an economic loophole.”

In crypto, the best trades often look insane until they don’t. Maegaard has made a career of being early to inevitabilities others can’t see. Wolf Game might be his biggest gamble yet, not just on a game but on solving the problem that’s killed every predecessor.

The four-year cycle that defined Daniel’s first decade in crypto is dead, he believes. In his view, institutional adoption, rate cuts, and employment data now drive crypto alongside traditional markets. He’s also acutely aware of AI’s relentless march forward.

“Maybe we have five years, maximum ten, before AI takes hundreds of millions of jobs,” he predicts. “These might be the golden years before everything changes.”

His collecting philosophy has evolved with the market. Once a long-term holder who rode positions for years, he’s now nimble, taking profits in Q4, reducing exposure between cycles.

“If you’re not engaged day-to-day with what’s happening on X, with mindshare shifts, you fall behind,” he observes. “You don’t have that edge anymore.”

He spends an hour daily studying charts, follows traders smarter than himself, dives down rabbit holes on Discord and Telegram. The trader who bet on Ripple’s utility now watches for projects with strong fundamentals, buybacks and burns.

“We lost focus with memecoins that had no intrinsic value,” he says. “I think we’re seeing a shift back to actual revenue-generating projects.”

The pattern holds: find what’s broken, bet before consensus forms, hold conviction through capitulation. Only now he’s not buying someone else’s dream. He’s architecting his own.

“I’ve always been a fundamentalist,” Daniel says, looking at the Wolf Game papers. “I need things to make sense. Revenue, buybacks, burns, actual value creation… Games are where value gets created through time and effort and community. That’s real.”

The next morning he’ll sign the papers. The community that waited through a year of darkness will have their game back. The experiment begins.

“You know what’s funny?” he concludes. “Everyone thinks I’m taking this huge risk. But the risk was already taken — by the people who’ve been posting in that Discord every day for a year with no game to play. They’re the ones with real conviction. I’m just giving them what they already believe in.”
