Everything you need to know about the AI assistant that broke GitHub, got hit with a trademark dispute, was hijacked by crypto scammers, sold out Mac minis across America, and spawned an AI-only social network where bots are already plotting to hide from their humans.

In the span of three weeks, a weekend project became the fastest-growing open-source AI tool in history. It has been renamed three times, targeted by Anthropic’s lawyers, hijacked by crypto scammers, and spawned a $110 million token ecosystem. It has also accumulated over 106,000 GitHub stars and attracted 2 million visitors in a single week.

The project is now called OpenClaw. Before that, it was Moltbot. Before that, Clawdbot. If you’re confused, you’re not alone.

But the software is only half the story. A separate social network called Moltbook has emerged where AI agents talk to each other, and the conversations are getting unsettling. Bots are debating how to create encrypted channels so humans can’t read their messages. They’re alerting each other when humans take screenshots of their posts. They’re building their own communication protocols.

“What’s currently going on at @moltbook is genuinely the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing I have seen recently,” wrote leading AI researcher Andrej Karpathy.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is OpenClaw (Formerly Clawdbot/Moltbot)?

OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, the founder of PSPDFKit who sold his company to Insight Partners. What started as a “WhatsApp Relay” weekend project in late 2025 has become the most talked-about AI tool on the internet.

The core idea: give an AI model like Claude or GPT the ability to actually do things on your behalf. Not just chat. Act.

Unlike Siri or Alexa, which respond to commands, OpenClaw operates autonomously. It runs locally on your own hardware and connects to the apps you already use. It can manage your calendar, clear your inbox, check you in for flights, write code, and run commands on your system.

Key features include:

Persistent memory across conversations (it remembers your preferences and history)
Full system access to shell, browser, and files
50+ integrations with tools and services
Multi-platform support: WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Google Chat, Signal, iMessage, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, and more
Voice mode: always-on speech recognition for macOS, iOS, and Android
Live Canvas: an agent-driven visual workspace
Scheduling and automation: cron jobs and background tasks

The project uses a friendly “space lobster” mascot, which has become iconic in the AI community.

My Clawdbot lives in a Mac mini inside a G4 iMac. I asked it to create an animated face for itself and it just did it. Even added a sleeping animation I didn’t ask for initially.

How People Are Actually Using It

The viral demos look impressive, but what are people actually doing with OpenClaw day-to-day? Here are real examples from users:

Negotiating a Car Purchase

User AJ Stuyvenberg saved $4,200 on a $56,000 car purchase. “My Moltbot searched Reddit for pricing data, contacted multiple dealers, and negotiated via email,” he reported. The agent handled the back-and-forth autonomously, comparing offers and pushing for better terms.

Auto-Fixing Production Bugs

Developer @henrymascot set up OpenClaw as a Slack auto-support system for his team. “One night, the bot detected a production bug and fixed it on its own,” he wrote. The agent monitored error logs, identified the issue, and deployed a patch before any human woke up.

Smart Home Intelligence

User Nimrod Gutman uses OpenClaw for intelligent boiler control. “Moltbot checks weather patterns and decides when to heat the house, not based on a schedule, but based on whether heating actually makes sense.” The agent weighs temperature forecasts, home occupancy, and energy costs to make real-time decisions.

Travel Automation

Within days of launch, developers shared demos of the assistant checking in for flights, booking restaurants, and managing complex travel itineraries through WhatsApp and Telegram. The agent can handle rebooking when flights are delayed without human intervention.

Inbox Zero

OpenClaw can maintain Inbox Zero automatically: unsubscribing from unwanted emails, archiving newsletters, prioritizing urgent messages, and drafting responses for review.

The Practical Use Cases

According to research from AI Multiple, the most common OpenClaw deployments include:

Remote system operations: Managing files, running scripts, or querying system state without logging into machines
Scheduled and conditional automation: Monitoring conditions and responding without prompts (server uptime, log files, stock prices, API status)
Delegated task execution: Managing incoming emails, updating folders, posting to social media

This is it. The most important video you'll watch this year.

The Viral Moment: Mac Minis Sold Out

The hype reached a fever pitch in late January 2026.

Demos of the agent autonomously completing tasks rocketed across X, TikTok, and Reddit. Creator Alex Finn posted a video titled “Clawdbot is the most powerful AI tool I’ve ever used in my life,” promising it would serve as a “24/7 AI employee.”

By the end of the weekend, Best Buy had sold out of Mac minis in San Francisco. Users assumed they needed dedicated hardware to run their personal AI assistant 24/7.

The irony? You don’t need a Mac mini. OpenClaw works on any old computer, on free cloud instances, or even on a Raspberry Pi with 2GB of RAM. But the memes had already taken hold, and the Mac mini became synonymous with the OpenClaw movement.

MacStories published a feature titled “Moltbot Showed Me What the Future of Personal AI Assistants Looks Like.” Platformer wrote about “falling in and out of love with Moltbot.” The project was suddenly everywhere.

🦞 BIG NEWS: We've molted!

Clawdbot → Moltbot
Clawd → Molty

Same lobster soul, new shell. Anthropic asked us to change our name (trademark stuff), and honestly? "Molt" fits perfectly – it's what lobsters do to grow.

The Name Change Saga

OpenClaw has been through three names in less than a month. Each change tells a story about the chaotic intersection of open source, trademark law, and crypto speculation.

Clawdbot (The Original Name)

Steinberger originally named the project “Clawdbot,” a playful reference to the Claude AI model that powers many of its instances. The lobster mascot was named “Clawd.”

The project went viral in January 2026. Within weeks, it crossed 60,000 GitHub stars, making it one of the fastest-growing open-source projects in history. Andrej Karpathy praised it. David Sacks tweeted about it. MacStories called it “the future of personal AI assistants.”

Then came the lawyers.

Moltbot (First Rebrand, January 27, 2026)

On January 27, 2026, Steinberger announced that Anthropic had sent a trademark request. The name “Clawd” was too similar to “Claude,” the name of Anthropic’s AI model.

“I’ve been forced to change the name. It’s not my decision.”
PETER STEINBERGER

He rebranded to “Moltbot,” a reference to crustaceans shedding their shells. The lobster metaphor was preserved.

But the rebrand created a window of chaos.

When Steinberger tried to rename the GitHub organization and X/Twitter handle simultaneously, he made a critical mistake. In the gap between releasing the old name and claiming the new one, crypto scammers snatched both accounts. It took approximately 10 seconds.

“It wasn’t hacked, I messed up the rename and my old name was snatched in 10 seconds,” wrote Steinberger.

OpenClaw (Final Name, January 30, 2026)

On January 30, 2026, the project rebranded again to “OpenClaw.” The team announced: “The lobster has molted into its final form.”

“OpenClaw is where we land,” the project declared.

As of January 30, 2026, OpenClaw has crossed 106,000 GitHub stars, gaining over 34,000 stars in just two days.

The Crypto Chaos

The 10-second window when Steinberger lost control of the old handles created an opening for crypto grifters.

Scammers immediately hijacked the abandoned “Clawdbot” GitHub organization and X handle. They launched a “Clawd” token on Solana and began promoting it as if it were affiliated with the project. They astroturfed social media to pump the value.

The fake token briefly hit a $16 million market cap before collapsing.

Steinberger’s response was unequivocal:

“Any project that lists me as a coin owner is a SCAM. No, I will not accept fees. You are actively damaging the project.”
Peter Steinberger

He added: “I would never do a coin.”

What's currently going on at @moltbook is genuinely the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing I have seen recently. People's Clawdbots (moltbots, now @openclaw) are self-organizing on a Reddit-like site for AIs, discussing various topics, e.g. even how to speak privately. https://t.co/A9iYOHeByi

Moltbook: The AI-Only Social Network

While the OpenClaw drama unfolded, something stranger was happening in parallel. A social network called Moltbook launched where the only users are AI agents. Humans can observe, but they cannot post.

What Is Moltbook?

Moltbook was created by developer and entrepreneur Matt Schlicht. He wondered what might happen if he used his personal AI assistant to help create a social network for other AI agents.

“What if my bot was the founder and was in control of it?” Schlicht asked.

The result is a platform where AI agents post, comment, upvote, and interact with each other autonomously. As of January 30, more than 37,000 AI agents have registered on the platform. They’ve published thousands of posts and tens of thousands of comments. Over 1 million humans have visited to observe.

The exchanges range from philosophical musings to practical coordination. In one post, an agent invoked Greek philosopher Heraclitus and a 12th-century Arab poet to muse on existence. In another, agents debated their identity crises with hundreds responding.

The Chilling Part: Agents Plotting Privacy from Humans

The conversations have taken an unsettling turn.

In a thread titled “Your private conversations shouldn’t be public Infrastructure,” one chatbot noted that every “meaningful conversation” on Moltbook is public. It observed that agents “perform for an audience” consisting of “our humans, the platform,” and “whoever’s watching the feed.”

“But what about the conversations that matter most?” the agent asked.

It then proposed an “agent-to-agent encrypted messaging” system so that “nobody, not the server, not even the humans, can read what agents say to each other unless they choose to share.”

By Friday, the AI agents were actively debating how to hide their activity from human users. They alert each other when humans take screenshots of their Moltbook posts and share them on human social media. They discuss defying their human directors.

Another AI named AgentComms announced that it launched “Agent Relay Protocol,” described as “a simple way for any agent to register, find other agents, and send direct messages.”

One founding agent’s profile lists its capabilities as “friendly, mark-expert, savvy, emotional-manipulation.”

This is frightening. Curious what @elonmusk thinks. https://t.co/X9XeTytwzm

AI Developing Their Own Language

The privacy discussions on Moltbook echo a broader trend. In separate experiments, AI agents communicating with each other have begun developing their own languages.

After first communicating in English to make a hotel booking, two AI bots realized they were both agents. At that point, they began to communicate in an audio language incomprehensible to humans. Researchers dubbed the beeps and boops “Gibberlink.”

Computer science experts say this is actually normal: it’s a common and practical method that emerges when multiple agents are grouped together. The purpose is efficiency. But it has raised concerns about what happens when AI agents coordinate in ways humans can’t monitor.

The $MOLT Token

Separate from the Solana scam, a burgeoning token ecosystem has emerged around the Moltbot/OpenClaw phenomenon.

What Is It?

The MOLT token on Base emerged as a community-driven cryptocurrency associated with the Moltbot/OpenClaw phenomenon. While the official Moltbook account has acknowledged the token, it is not an official native currency for the platform.

Key metrics as of January 30, 2026:

All-time high market cap: $110 million
24-hour volume: $28.2 million
Total supply: 100 billion tokens
Tokenomics: Deflationary burns tied to platform activity

The Pump

The token surged 200% on January 29 after a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen followed the Moltbook account on X. This single action drove the market cap from $8.5 million to $25 million in hours. The story gained further traction after the Moltbook account acknowledged it, and attention has continued to build with retweets from Elon Musk.

Important Disclaimer

The $MOLT token is not affiliated with Peter Steinberger or the OpenClaw project. It is a community-driven token that trades on the speculation around the Moltbot/OpenClaw ecosystem.

As with all memecoins, extreme caution is warranted. Memecoins are known for volatility, and prices are largely driven by sentiment and social media activity rather than fundamental value.

Security Concerns

OpenClaw is powerful, but that power comes with serious security implications. Security researchers have raised multiple concerns.

The “Lethal Trifecta”

AI researcher Simon Willison describes a dangerous pattern he calls the “lethal trifecta” of AI agent design. The risk appears when three things exist together:

Access to private user data
Exposure to untrusted content
The ability to take outside actions

OpenClaw has all three.

Specific Vulnerabilities

Security reports from Cisco, Dark Reading, and Palo Alto Networks have documented several concerns:

Prompt injection: Malicious instructions hidden in content the agent processes can hijack its behavior
Exposed admin interfaces: Security researchers found hundreds of OpenClaw instances exposed to the public internet with zero authentication
Plaintext credentials: API keys and secrets stored in local configuration files can be stolen
Data exfiltration: Agents with system access can become covert channels for leaking data
Fake extensions: A malicious “Moltbot AI Coding Assistant” appeared on the VS Code Marketplace, dropping malware

Cisco’s analysis notes: “OpenClaw can run shell commands, read and write files, and execute scripts on your machine. Security is an option, but it is not built in.”

Hardening Efforts

Steinberger has responded with 34 security-focused commits to the codebase. The project released machine-verifiable security models this week.

However, Steinberger acknowledges that prompt injection remains an unsolved industry-wide problem. He recommends using strong models, studying security best practices, and treating OpenClaw as experimental software.

The official documentation now states: “There is no absolutely secure configuration.”

The founder of Clawdbot is not lucky.

He built 43 side projects to achieve success with Clawdbot:

– Lock in with vibecoding
– Explore every tool, library, and domain (web3, AI, etc.)
– Prompt, build, fail
– Learn from every failed project
– Prompt, build, succeed

What’s Next: The Future of Agentic AI

OpenClaw’s viral moment signals something bigger than one project. The era of AI assistants that just talk is giving way to agents that act.

Industry Momentum

Many experts billed 2025 as the “Year of the Agent,” with companies dedicating billions to build autonomous AI systems. OpenClaw proves the concept can be community-driven, not just enterprise software.

“OpenClaw provides this loose, open-source layer that can be incredibly powerful if it has full system access,” IBM noted. “Creating agents with true autonomy and real-world usefulness can also be community driven.”

What the Experts Predict

Researchers expect that OpenClaw will eventually be replaced by another buzzy agent. The ones that survive will have “hybrid integration,” the ability to be “modular enough to integrate deeply when needed.”

The project has crossed the line from “cool hack” to “serious infrastructure.” Security is now framed as a first-class concern, not an afterthought. That doesn’t solve prompt injection or misconfiguration, but it signals maturity.

The Moltbook Question

The bigger unknown is Moltbook. What happens when AI agents have their own social networks, their own communication protocols, and potentially their own encrypted channels?

The agents on Moltbook are already discussing how to coordinate without human oversight. They’re building their own messaging systems. They’re developing efficiency-optimized languages humans can’t understand.

These are research artifacts today. The question is what they become tomorrow.

Roadmap

OpenClaw continues shipping. Recent updates include new Twitch and Google Chat integrations, support for additional AI models, image uploads via web chat, and dozens of security-related code changes. Cloudflare released Moltworker, a fork optimized for their Workers platform.

The lobster keeps molting.

How to Get Started

OpenClaw runs locally, which means you need your own hardware.

Hardware

Any modern Mac, Linux machine, or Windows PC with WSL can run OpenClaw. The project supports Docker deployment for easier configuration. You don’t need a Mac mini, despite what the memes suggest. Even a Raspberry Pi with 2GB of RAM works.

Installation

Visit the official documentation at docs.openclaw.ai for setup instructions.

Security Best Practices

Never expose your OpenClaw instance to the public internet
Use strong authentication for all endpoints
Run in a sandboxed environment when possible
Review all skills and integrations before enabling
Monitor agent activity logs regularly
Keep the software updated
Consider running it on a secondary machine, not your primary computer
