The announcements came within days of each other.

On January 24, 2026, Gemini announced that Nifty Gateway, the popular NFT marketplace it had acquired in 2019, would shut down. The original deadline of February 23 was extended to April 23 after community outcry. Approximately 650,000 NFTs would need to be withdrawn.

Three days later, Kayvon Tehranian revealed he was transferring ownership of Foundation, the artist platform he had built into a $230 million primary sales venue, to BlackDove, a digital art streaming and display company. The same week, Tehranian announced that Rodeo, his social NFT app, was closing entirely.

The wave of closures and sales marked the effective end of a marketplace ecosystem that, four years earlier, seemed poised to transform the art world. MakersPlace, the platform that had collaborated with Christie’s on the landmark $69.3 million Beeple sale, shut down in January 2025. KnownOrigin, acquired by eBay in 2022, wound down in July 2024. Async Art, celebrated for its technical innovation, closed in October 2023. Christie’s shuttered its digital art department in September 2025. Kraken NFT, Bybit NFT, and X2Y2 all ceased operations in 2025. Art Blocks capped its Curated collection at 500 projects. LG shut down its Art Lab.

The numbers told the story. Art NFT trading volume, which reached $2.9 billion in 2021, fell to $23.8 million by the first quarter of 2025, according to DappRadar. A 93 percent decline. The average price of an art NFT, which peaked at $2,044 in 2021, bottomed out at $475 in 2023. Active traders, who numbered 529,101 at their peak in 2022, dwindled to 19,575.

The Boom That Built Them

To understand the collapse, you have to understand the moment that made these platforms seem invincible.

The opening bid was $100.

On February 25, 2021, Christie’s launched an online auction for a digital artwork by an artist who went by Beeple. The piece, “Everydays: The First 5000 Days,” was a mosaic of 5,000 individual images that Mike Winkelmann had created and posted online every single day since May 1, 2007. No major auction house had ever sold a purely digital NFT.

Within hours, that $100 bid soared past $1 million. By the penultimate day, it reached $9 million. In the final two minutes, bids leapt in $10 million and $15 million increments as 33 bidders competed for ownership. When the gavel fell on March 11, the hammer price was $69.3 million, making Beeple the third most valuable living artist at auction, behind only David Hockney and Jeff Koons.

The sale, facilitated in collaboration with MakersPlace, sent discussion of NFTs into a fever pitch. Total NFT sales that year reached somewhere between $25 billion and $41 billion, up from roughly $250 million in 2020. A technology that had existed since 2014 had broken through into the mainstream, and the platforms that enabled it appeared to stand at the center of a permanent transformation.

MakersPlace raised $30 million. It hosted work by Banksy, Hackatao, and Vakseen. It had partnered with the world’s most prestigious auction house on a record-breaking sale.

By January 2025, it was gone. “Ongoing market challenges and funding difficulties have made it impossible to sustain operations while fulfilling our mission,” content manager Brady Evan Walker announced.

A Smaller, Simpler World

Async Art launched in February 2020, before the boom, before Beeple, before anyone outside a niche community knew what an NFT was. The platform distinguished itself through technical ambition. Artists could create multi-layered, dynamic pieces that changed over time or could be controlled by collectors. A Blueprints system enabled the creation of generative NFTs without requiring artists to write code. Iconic projects emerged: XCOPY’s “Grifters,” Osinachi’s “Across the Face.”

XCOPY, a London-based artist whose glitched, dystopian imagery had become iconic, had been minting NFTs since 2018. “I got lucky,” he told SuperRare. “Late 2017, I bought some bitcoin and fell down the crypto rabbit hole. Soon after that I discovered Ascribe.io which was using Bitcoin to create digital editions. I started selling these for a couple of bucks through twitter and geeking out with other nerds.” His works now commanded millions: “A Coin for the Ferryman” sold for $6 million, “All Time High in the City” for $6.2 million.

In February 2021, the same month Christie’s announced the Beeple auction, Async Art closed a $2 million seed round led by Lemniscap, with participation from Galaxy Interactive and Signum Growth Capital. The timing seemed auspicious.

It was not enough.

When Async Art announced its shutdown on October 23, 2023, CEO Conlan Rios reflected on what had changed. “When we launched in Feb 2020, the NFT world was smaller and simpler,” he wrote. “Everyone knew each other and there was a genuine sense of altruism all around.”

The shift from art collector and community builder to technical platform operator had brought challenges Rios had not anticipated. “We began encountering some less glamorous aspects of this world as motivations of the industry changed,” he observed. The platform stopped accepting new submissions that same day. Marketplace purchases ended by year’s close. Rios pledged that Async NFTs, pinned on IPFS, would continue to exist on-chain.

The artwork would persist. The venue that created it would not.

The Corporate Retreat

KnownOrigin offered a different lesson: that even corporate ownership could not guarantee survival.

Founded in Manchester in 2018, KnownOrigin established itself as a significant venue for crypto artists. It hosted seminal works by XCOPY, Hackatao, and Miss Al Simpson. In June 2022, eBay acquired the platform. The deal closed on June 21, though the company declined to disclose the price. KnownOrigin’s team and intellectual property were integrated into eBay’s web3 division. The acquisition came near the market’s peak.

Within two years, the situation had deteriorated. On February 20, 2024, KnownOrigin laid off 30 percent of its staff. Five months later, on July 17, the platform announced it would wind down entirely.

The retreat extended beyond startups. In September 2025, Christie’s closed its digital art department. The unit was founded in 2022 to capitalize on the NFT moment. But since launching, none of the 11 auctions Christie’s 3.0 hosted broke past $400,000 in sales. The department that had once facilitated a $69.3 million transaction was now overseeing sales that barely cracked six figures.

A Christie’s spokesperson framed the decision diplomatically: the company had “made a strategic decision to reformat digital art sales.”

To the Nifty Gateway community,

Thank you for your feedback on the recently announced closure of the platform. It is our goal to conduct the process of closing Nifty Gateway in a smooth and orderly way and that all of our customers are able to move their NFTs…

The Infrastructure Problem

The closures exposed a fragility that had always lurked beneath the surface: most NFTs do not actually live on the blockchain. The token exists on-chain, but the artwork and metadata it points to typically reside on external servers. When those servers go dark, the NFT becomes a pointer to nothing.

A 2024 analysis by Pinata found that 27 percent of the top 1,000 NFT collections stored their metadata on centralized servers. Some NFTs, the report noted, “simply no longer exist. Their smart contracts point to metadata that is no longer accessible from the original centralized servers they pointed to.” Amazon Web Services had terminated hosting for at least two major NFT projects in 2024 for terms-of-service violations.

Even IPFS, the decentralized storage protocol often marketed as a solution, offers no guarantee of permanence. Files on IPFS will “age out” over time unless they are frequently accessed or “pinned” to a server. If the entity responsible for pinning stops paying or disappears, the artwork vanishes with it.

XCOPY’s career illustrates the problem. Before SuperRare, before the million-dollar sales, he minted work on platforms that no longer exist: Ascribe, RareArt Labs, Digital Objects. Those early pieces are now known among collectors as “the lost XCOPYs.”

“Death Wannabe,” originally released on July 17, 2018, had ten editions. Only three remain in circulation. The other seven are locked in the original RareArt Labs contract, inaccessible. “Disaster Suit,” minted ten days later, survives in four editions, but its metadata is gone. “New Teeth 2033” was lost entirely when Digital Objects shut down. After Ascribe closed, XCOPY minted seven variations of “Loading New Conflict…” and gifted them to his former supporters on the platform. He described how Ascribe “fell into the cryptoart platform graveyard.”

It's a pure loss that Nifty Gateway is closing its doors.

The closure is weighty. Time will be kind to their role, but I largely just sit in gratitude for what was given to me by its people before an ending we had to prepare for unfolded.

The Nifty Gateway shutdown brought these concerns into sharp relief. Critics questioned the platform’s custodial model, which had held NFTs in Gemini-controlled wallets rather than users’ own wallets.

Collector G4SP4RD warned that if Gemini shut down Nifty Gateway’s servers, collections from artists like Beeple and Sam Spratt “will be broken with no possibility of recovery.” Artist Bryan Brinkman, who had minted work on the platform, acknowledged that “many of us knew the risks of minting on there, and over the years they improved contracts, but still clung to too many centralized choices.”

In response to the backlash, Nifty Gateway announced it would migrate metadata to Arweave, a decentralized storage network. But the platform acknowledged that some NFTs minted in 2021 or earlier could not be updated to point to decentralized storage. For those pieces, Nifty Gateway pledged to “continue to host this metadata in perpetuity.”

The platforms may close, but what happens to the artwork depends on how it was built. This is the uncomfortable reality of NFT art: some pieces will outlast their platforms, while others will vanish with them.

For work minted with decentralized storage and on-chain metadata, the odds are better. Async Art NFTs pinned on IPFS may persist if someone continues paying to host them. MakersPlace NFTs on Ethereum remain tradable on secondary marketplaces, though the experience of viewing them may degrade as platform-specific features disappear.

What has undoubtedly been lost is the infrastructure that once surrounded it: the curation, the discovery, the sense of place that platforms like KnownOrigin and MakersPlace provided. An artist could once launch a career or find collectors through Nifty Gateway. Those pathways are narrowing.

OpenSea crossed $2.6B in trading volume this month, with over 90% from token trading.

This is just the beginning of our transformation, from “NFT marketplace” to “trade everything.”

What Survives

OpenSea, the largest marketplace, has consolidated its dominance. The platform recaptured 67 percent of remaining Ethereum NFT volume by late 2025, up from 36 percent at the start of the year. The comeback came from expanding into fungible tokens and adjacent onchain assets, making targeted hires, and rebuilding relationships across the ecosystem as competitors exited. How much of that renewed volume proves durable will become clearer once the $SEA airdrop incentives run their course.

Blur launched in 2022 with zero fees and tools for professional traders, and by early 2023, it had overtaken OpenSea with over 50 percent of Ethereum NFT volume. The BLUR token airdrop fueled a frenzy of wash trading and mercenary liquidity. When the incentives faded, so did volume. Blur proved that token incentives could bootstrap a marketplace. It also proved they don’t sustain one.

Solana’s Magic Eden bet big on multi-chain expansion, adding Ethereum, Bitcoin Ordinals, and Polygon while competitors retrenched. It worked for a while: the platform surpassed Blur on Ethereum and captured over half of Ordinals volume. Then the December 2024 token launch cratered 67 percent in hours amid a buggy app and broken claims process. Ordinals volume has since cooled.

SuperRare, the curated platform where XCOPY minted his first NFT in 2018, continues to operate. It opened a physical gallery in New York called “Offline,” narrowed its scope, and leaned into reputation over volume. The market that remains resembles the pre-2021 crypto art world far more than the bull run’s euphoria.

Objkt emerged from the collapse of Hic et Nunc in 2021 and became the default home for Tezos art. It now aggregates listings from fx(hash) and Teia. For artists who built on Tezos during the boom, the work persists because they migrated together.

As for Foundation, Tehranian said its smart contracts and royalty mechanics would remain immutable, with BlackDove assuming responsibility for pinning content. Its future under new ownership remains to be seen.

One bright spot has been Gondi, a peer-to-peer NFT lending protocol that grew from 1 percent market share to 70 percent between September 2023 and January 2026, surpassing $100 million in total value locked and $650 million in annualized loan volume. The platform facilitated the largest on-chain NFT-backed loan to date, $2.75 million against a rare CryptoPunk, and seven-figure sales of works by XCOPY. Where marketplaces struggled on declining volume, Gondi found demand among collectors who wanted liquidity without selling.

A small but dedicated digital art community remains. Critics, curators, and artists who were working with blockchain-based art before and after the 2021 frenzy continue to create and collect. The speculation has faded. What remains appears more selective, more focused on art rather than appreciation.

That shift exposed a contradiction at the heart of the web3 promise. The early rhetoric promised disintermediation, a future where blockchain would render galleries obsolete as middlemen between artists and collectors. Interestingly, the opposite has played out. As marketplaces collapsed, a new generation of digital-native galleries has ascended to fill the void, offering the curation, physical exhibition, and artist development that transaction-driven platforms never sustained.

In December, Art Basel Miami Beach launched Zero 10, a dedicated sector for digital art inside the convention center. First-time exhibitors like Fellowship, Heft, AOTM, and Nguyen Wahed showed alongside traditional mainstays like Pace. 65 percent of the work was sold by mid-afternoon on the first VIP day. The galleries that web3 once counted out were keeping it alive.

The Lesson

What unwound was not digital art, nor the idea of blockchain-based ownership. It was a specific institutional layer: the venture-backed NFT marketplace, built for exponential growth in a market that proved cyclical, thin, and culturally fragile.

Most of these platforms were designed for scale. They assumed a steady inflow of new collectors, rising prices, and sustained transactional velocity. Their costs reflected that assumption: engineering teams, compliance burdens, customer support, marketing, and, in many cases, centralized custody and hosting. When volumes collapsed by more than 90 percent, there was no graceful way to shrink.

NFT marketplaces attempted to combine the economics of startups, the norms of financial infrastructure, and the curatorial role of cultural institutions. In the boom, that hybrid appeared powerful. In contraction, it proved untenable. Art markets do not behave like fintech. Cultural ecosystems do not scale linearly. And speculative liquidity is not a foundation. What survives does so by accepting those limits.

The consequences are uneven. Artists who built sustainable collector bases continue to release work. Collectors who bought with conviction rather than leverage still hold. But a generation of platforms is gone, and with them the discovery engines, editorial framing, and institutional memory that once contextualized this work.

The lesson is not that NFTs failed. It is that markets built on speculation cannot double as cultural institutions, and that decentralization in theory does not guarantee resilience in practice.

The NFT marketplace era declined with slow recognition: the technology outlived the business models built around it. The idea that marketplaces themselves would become permanent arbiters of culture has been tested and found wanting.

History will likely remember the 2021 moment less for its prices than for its misalignment: between scale and substance, liquidity and meaning, infrastructure and art.

The unwinding is underway. What comes next will be smaller, slower, and, if it lasts, built very differently.
