At 33, Orkhan Mammadov builds systems that build themselves. The Azerbaijani artist began coding at 11, became a professional designer by 18, and has spent the years since constructing what he calls “visual intelligence:” generative works that exist between human intention and machine autonomy.

His breakthrough came with Carpetdiem, an infinite fractal system reimagining traditional carpet patterns through mathematical precision, but it was Circular Repetition, exhibited at the 2019 Venice Biennale, that announced him as a different kind of craftsman: one who feeds 15,000 historical ornamental images into neural networks and watches as the AI generates new patterns that honor centuries of tradition while inventing forms that never existed.

Now, with Visions, dropping Oct. 30 in partnership with OpenSea, Mammadov confronts the crisis at the heart of our image-saturated age: that memory is mutable, history is fiction, and what we see has always been a lie we agreed to believe. Drawing from canonical masterpieces — Holbein’s distorted Ambassadors, Bosch’s apocalyptic Garden, Velázquez’s disorienting Las Meninas the series transforms a thousand fractured images into an interactive field where each touch mutates truth into lie, menace into mercy. Mammadov’s AI amplifies this ancient deception, making viewers complicit in manufacturing belief as images ripple and rewrite themselves like false memories.

“Limits create frames, frames create frameworks, frameworks create rules, rules create logic, and logic generates intelligence,” Mammadov explains.

In an era when reality drowns in misinformation and social media algorithms democratize deception, Visions stages the vertigo of living in a world where, as his work insists, to see has always been to misremember. What follows is a conversation about building autonomous beauty, honoring heritage through algorithmic reimagining, and why the strongest art comes from obsession with systems that surprise even their creator.

Each edition of Next Up showcases a new artist from our curated list of ascendant talents who have been making significant waves throughout digital art. This week, our spotlight turns to Orkhan.

Just letting you know upfront, I’ll be minting this for myself. No offense 🤭

Matt Medved: How did you first become interested/involved in digital art?

Orkhan: I think digital art found me before I really knew what I was doing. I started to code and design at age of 11, become a professional code driven designer at age of 18. Studied Computer Science later Visual Communication Design. From the start, I’ve been obsessed with creating things that don’t just exist visually but have systems, logic, and autonomy, like nature itself. So digital art became my playground for building self-generating, evolving forms.

How would you describe your art?

My work is about building systems that build themselves, generating visual intelligence that’s part human, part algorithm. Carpets, immersive patterns, interactive installations, generative AI, they all stem from the same obsession: procedural, logical, and methodical creation that surprises even me. I like perfection, but I love when things go out of control in interesting ways.

What’s your process like? And where do you usually find inspiration?

Process is everything. I start by understanding limits, then design my way out of them. Limits create frames, frames create frameworks, frameworks create rules, rules create logic, and logic generates intelligence. Inspiration comes from everywhere: nature, archives, 10,000 carpets’ data, or simply trying to create a tool that solves a tedious problem.

What was your breakthrough moment in digital art?

I’d say Carpetdiem was pivotal. It’s an autonomous system generating infinite unique carpets using Sierpinski fractals. It was a moment where art, math, and code came together, showing that generative works could be both infinitely complex and emotionally engaging. The project proved you can merge cultural heritage with pure mathematical beauty, and it resonated globally.

“Watching the AI generate patterns that mimic, distort, and innovate simultaneously felt like witnessing a new kind of craftsmanship emerge.”

What’s one piece you’ve created that holds particular significance to you—and why?

Circular Repetition is deeply meaningful because it was my first full-scale artwork, and it was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2019. Where my professional art career started. I worked with over 15,000 ornamental images from museums and libraries worldwide, feeding them into a custom neural network that could analyze, learn, and reimagine orientalism patterns. The result is an infinite, evolving system of new patterns, designs that had never existed before, yet feel connected to centuries of cultural tradition.

This piece isn’t just visual. It questions repetition, legacy, and the role of intelligence, human or artificial, in creating and reinterpreting culture. Watching the AI generate patterns that mimic, distort, and innovate simultaneously felt like witnessing a new kind of craftsmanship emerge. Circular Repetition is where my exploration of procedural, autonomous creation truly began, honoring the past while imagining the future.

What are the biggest challenges facing rising digital artists

Visibility and longevity. The internet moves fast, and trends often overshadow meaning. Many artists are creating incredible work, but sustaining attention and building long-term value around your vision is difficult. Also, balancing creative authenticity with the demands of algorithms and platforms is becoming its own kind of art form.

What advice do you have for rising digital artists?

Don’t chase trends. Build your own language. Experiment, fail, learn the tools, but always return to what feels personal and necessary. The strongest works come from obsession and honesty, not from what’s currently popular. And remember, collaboration is the future. Share knowledge, not just content.

What’s next for you — any upcoming drops or collaborations you’re excited about?

My main focus right now is Visions, which drops on October 30 in an exclusive partnership with OpenSea. It’s an immersive generative series exploring mutable memory, perception, and collective consciousness. Each piece evolves through AI-driven processes, challenging how we experience time, history, and cultural narratives. The series blurs the line between human and machine authorship, inviting the audience to reflect on what is authentic, what is curated, and what emerges from the system itself. It’s my most conceptually ambitious work to date, combining interactivity, deep data-driven algorithms, and a poetic approach to digital storytelling.
