The Los Angeles County Museum of Art announced Oct. 22 that donors have offered more than 200 digital artworks. The gifts span several years, with works ranging from the mid-20th century to contemporary art made with artificial intelligence.

LACMA Digital Leaders (LDL) is leading the initiative. Members and other donors, including the Mneme Foundation, are offering works from their collections. Jeannie Vu and Jehan Chu co-chair the group, which was established in 2023.

The announcement brings together historical computer art, recent generative work and projects including Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks. LACMA distinguishes its initial donations from additional gifts offered over the coming years.

Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, said the gifts support a collection tracing digital art’s development. The aim, he said, is to “connect digital art to the art of every era and culture represented in our galleries.”

Which artists are included in the LACMA gift?

The initial donations include works by Refik Anadol, Nancy Baker Cahill, Dmitri Cherniak, Tyler Hobbs, Carlos Luna James and Maya Man. The list continues with Lauren Lee McCarthy, Sarah Meyohas, Trevor Paglen, Casey Reas, Monica Rizzolli and Rafaël Rozendaal.

Other initial contributions include works by Jen Stark, Emily Xie, Lu Yang and Yatreda, alongside Bored Ape Yacht Club, TwelveFold and Sarah Zucker. Historical works by Rebecca Allen, Harold Cohen, Manfred Mohr and Vera Molnár round out the initial group.

Additional gifts offered include works by 0xDEAFBEEF, Robert Alice, Kim Asendorf, Justin Aversano, Erick Calderon and Mitchell Chan. The museum also lists CryptoPunks and works by William Mapan and Anne Spalter among the additional offers.

How LACMA Digital Leaders supports the collection

LDL works with curators, conservators and museum leadership on collecting, preserving and presenting digital art. Its public programming has included panels in Miami, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.

Vu and Chu said the gift reflects their commitment to securing a permanent institutional home for digital art across generations. Govan guides the initiative as part of the museum’s broader work with art and technology.

Building on earlier digital art gifts

The initiative follows LACMA’s 2023 gift from the Cozomo de’ Medici Collection. That donation and pledge comprised 22 works by 13 artists, spanning code, AI, painting, performance, photography and video.

In 2022, Paris Hilton spearheaded a fund supporting acquisitions of digital art by women. LACMA’s latest release names Nancy Baker Cahill and Krista Kim among the artists represented through that effort.

The museum has also partnered with Cactoid Labs to invite artists to respond to its existing collection. Emily Xie’s 2023 Interwoven collection drew on quilts and textiles held by LACMA, including Martha Lou Jones’ 1896 Bullseye quilt.

Later that year, Dmitri Cherniak collaborated with Avant Arte and LACMA on a print and NFT edition based on Ringers #962. The original entered LACMA’s collection through the Cozomo de’ Medici gift.

LACMA traces this work to its Art and Technology program, launched in 1967. That program paired artists including Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg with corporations to explore new tools for artistic production.

The museum’s announcement does not give a transfer schedule for individual works or an exhibition date for the full gift.
