Art Blocks, Ethereum’s leading generative art platform, announced today that it will cap its collection at 500 projects to mark its fifth anniversary this November.

Founder Erick “Snowfro” Calderon says the “Art Blocks 500” will close a foundational chapter in onchain generative art, preserving every Curated, Playground, Factory, Presents, Collaborations, and Explorations project released since 2020 as a finite set.

The move effectively concludes Art Blocks’ renowned Curated program — responsible for iconic series like Chromie Squiggle, Fidenza, and Ringers — after two final drops by globally recognized artists. Three community-focused Explorations releases will follow, completing the 500-project milestone before the platform shifts its focus to preserving and elevating the collection while continuing to grow its self-publishing Studio and Engine partnerships.

“The idea for the Art Blocks 500 actually surfaced last year, but didn’t start gaining traction until early this year. The market was basically at its absolute worst when we decided to move forward,” Snowfro tells Now Media. “We were getting close to 500 projects and our fifth anniversary, thinking critically about preservation, storytelling, and the evolution of the generative medium, and felt like the time was right to build a foundation around the legacy we’ve created.”

This decision lands in a vastly different market than the one that catapulted Art Blocks to fame. During the 2021 NFT boom, Art Blocks’ sales volume surged dramatically — rising from $11 million in June to $63 million in July, before peaking at around $587 million in August. Volume then began cooling to $243 million in September.

That exuberance proved unsustainable. As the greater NFT market underwent a violent correction, Art Blocks saw its secondary trading volumes and prices fall precipitously after the boom years. According to DappRadar data, Art Blocks’ trading volume has plummeted 95% from its highs, with an 88% decline in the number of sales.

“The last couple of years have been excruciatingly tough,” Snowfro admits. “It’s been really hard to handle the market, the sentiment, and people giving up left and right, and the derogatory ways that people refer to my baby, which is Art Blocks.”

However, he is quick to point out that it hasn’t been all doom and gloom, highlighting how museums like MoMA, LACMA, Toledo, and the Museum of Art and Light are dedicating space to generative art.

“In all those really tough times, simultaneously, we’re talking to museums and seeing fresh faces expressing genuine curiosity around what we’re doing, so it’s not all lost,” he says. “We’re being validated daily, even on the hardest days. It’s becoming more culturally ubiquitous. It was not reflected in the price initially, and it may not be reflected in the price for a very long time.”

Does Art Blocks make this decision if generative art drops were still selling like hot cakes? Almost certainly not. The cap is a sober response to new market realities, signaling the company’s acknowledgment of its shifting role in a post-boom climate. The platform can no longer count on a hyperactive market to sustain endless new releases. Instead, it’s drawing a line under its formative era, turning the first 500 projects into a historical set: a museum-grade canon for the early days of onchain generative art.

“There’s something really special about the fact that any effort to preserve a single project can be inherited by the entire collection,” Snowfro explains. “Constraining it to a finite set makes it easier to grok, and it helps new audiences engage more meaningfully. We’re excited to lean into the stories inside the Art Blocks 500 and make the work more desirable to a broader audience.”

Beeple’s Everyday entitled “RIP GEN ART (1965-2025)”

In July, a poll by collector Cozomo de’ Medici sparked a conversation around whether generative art is dead, surfacing many of the issues weighing on the category. As Eli Scheinman noted, 2021’s boom was years in the making but ultimately oversupplied the market with oversized collections and lacked lasting cultural pull beyond crypto circles. The funds that fueled early demand have mostly dried up, attention has shifted toward AI-driven narratives, and blind minting has left collectors stuck with illiquid works they didn’t love. Punk5185 was harsher: some “artists” were opportunistic engineers, the aesthetic became repetitive, Dutch auctions crushed floors, ETH stayed depressed, and a glut of sellers still quietly waits to exit, keeping buyers on edge.

It’s quite the laundry list of grievances, and while not all of them can be pinned on Art Blocks, Snowfro has openly acknowledged some hard truths.

“We’ve made a bunch of mistakes at Art Blocks, but who hasn’t?” says Snowfro. “We’ve gone through some shit. I ask people to put themselves in our shoes for a moment, and everyone thinks they would have made a better decision. Maybe they would have some of the time, but I don’t think they would have all of the time.”

He concedes that the whiplash of 2021’s meteoric rise, followed by the sharp collapse of the NFT market, exposed cracks in the platform’s ability to keep up.

“Managing internal and external expectations has been the toughest,” he says. “I have always had a tremendous amount of conviction about what we’re doing, but it’s hard to exude conviction and explain to people that we’re literally in a canoe with tiny paddles going through rapids with little and in some cases no control of where we land and still have them trust your leadership.”

Art Blocks is not the only generative art platform rethinking its strategy amid market headwinds. Fxhash recently announced plans to discontinue new releases on its native Tezos chain, shifting focus to Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, as part of a broader multichain pivot. The decision sparked backlash from parts of its early artist community, many of whom saw Tezos as a foundational home for generative art thanks to its eco-friendly, low-cost minting environment. High-profile Tezos-native artist Zancan publicly criticized the move, arguing that fxhash had built its reputation and culture on Tezos and was now abandoning the very ecosystem that helped it thrive.

“I wish we had infinite resources, and that we could keep shipping on both chains as we’d like to,” fxhash founder ciphrd retorted. “But we don’t.”

The past two years have been brutal for digital art marketplaces, with platforms like MakersPlace, KnownOrigin, and Async Art shuttering. Art Blocks has avoided that fate, but the turbulence has reshaped its trajectory. Art Blocks 500 is as much a strategic recalibration as a capstone celebration: an effort to protect its legacy, reestablish scarcity, and give the company room to chart a new course in a far tougher market.

“Having been in crypto for years now, I was not ignorant of the potential of a significantly declining market, but I didn’t expect it to decline so much,” Snowfro reflects. “Nor did the majority of the participants, whether they be artists or collectors or team members.”

What would he have done differently in hindsight?

“I really just wish I had followed my gut way more than I did along the way,” Snowfro says. “The Art Blocks 500 is very much a decision that I feel is the correct decision in my gut. It aligns with what I’m excited about, why I’m here in the first place, and where I see the future of generative art at the intersection of blockchain tech heading.”
